Howdy all. I have a 40 litre tank with one 5 inch goldfish, 3 white cloud fish and 2 gorgeous peppered catfish that were all bought at the same time. My problem is that my catfish are both spinning, lying on their sides, swimming and even eating upside down.

BUT they are both eating like pigs, no fin clamp, they haven't changed colour (no darkening or lightening), no ich, no wounds, no fungus, no red fins, no heavy breathing.

They have lived in the same tank, with the same tank mates for the past 2 years with no problems whatsoever. I have never had a sick fish (if you can believe it). I have a biological filter, standard small sized gravel, a fake plant, some ornaments - all have been there for 2 years. They eat frozen goldfish food (meat and algal matter), freshly caught mosquito wrigglers, sometimes flake food, and cooked shelled peas and cooked broccoli. I feed them once a day (2cm cubed), sometimes twice if they are still hounding me for food in the evening, and vary their diet.

The goldfish has never tried to eat them, even when they weren't fed for three days (relying on the husband to feed them  ). But she does kind of float down onto them now that they are sick, which is distressing for everyone concerned. So I have removed them to a hospital tank.

I do 30% water changes once a week, and vacuum the substrate because the goldfish is messy. I use tap water treated with a chlorine neutralizer which detoxifies heavy metals, and is absolutely brilliant (I consider this is why my fish are so healthy usually)

My ammonia is at 0, pH at 7, 0 nitrates. I have no idea as to the water temperature, but test it with my hand. I know that's bad, but they have all lived very happily for 2 years remember ;) )

Can anyone help? I hate watching their acrobatics, even if it doesn't seem to stress them.

Thank you in advance

I would suggest a thremometer. Is the tank heated at all?
If not then temperature fluctuations can play havoc with a fishes swimbladder or even the food can become blocked in the gut causing gas to form and make them swim funny.
