Hi my 9 year old daughter "Princess Paradise" got an adult Paradise fish about 9 months ago. It was alone in a 5g tank. Mid November we switched Seawave over to a 10g tank and added a couple of African Dwarf frogs and a golf ball sized apple snail. Everyone has got along and done really well.

A couple of days ago Seawave started to show less interest in feeding and now hardly feeds at all. He has always been an excellent eater. We feed him tropical fish flakes 6 days a week and he eats a lot of frozen blood worms that we feed the frogs. He also sometimes eats a bit of the snail's spirulina pellets.

Today we noticed he was changing colour. He has always had very bright "traditional" Paradise fish colours blue with red stripes, now hehas turned very grey along the top of his back almost like his scales have come off. I have included a couple of pictures the colour isn't great but you can see the lack of definition to his markings as his stripes should go all the way up ..

Water parameters are good Nh3 0, No2 0, No3 10 and Ph is about 7.8. Water temp is at 78'F. We added a few floating frogbit plants and did a water change a few days ago. The water change was about 25% and alittle overdue, which is unusual.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated my little girl loves Seawave tremendously.

Maybe your fish has an internal problem... digestive system maybe... sorry, not much help...

He looks quite disgruntled :p It's probably bacterial and he needs to be treated with antibiotics (snails won't survive this - I don't think it's good for the frogs either). However, he may also just eb suffering from constipation (reduce the amount of flake you're feeding and give him some veggies like blanched zuchinni and mroe live/frozen foods). If this is the case, feeding him only daphnia for the next few days after fasting him for a day first might to the trick. If this has no effect, it'll have to be the antibiotics so you'll have to work out a way of moving the snail and frogs to another tank or moving him into one (the other tank must eb cycled).

Thank you for your response.

I moved the snail and frogs to my other daughters guppy tank. I have no experience with diseases except internal parasites in puffers so I though it might have been ick. I added aquarium salt and increased the heat and airation. I thought salt wouldn't hurt. He seems to be perking up, colours better and ate some blood worms. I will try some spirulina pellets as he loves them and that should get things moving if he is constipated.

If it were ich he'd either have some white spots or would at least occasionaly be flicking against objects. Having said that, raising the temp. may have helped him fight the infection and salt is useful for a lot of things besides ich. If he is looking better, keep at it and hopefuly he'll recover on his own :) Paradisefish are extremely hardy creatures so he can certainly make a full recovery.
