Hi,
I have had this little guy for maybe a month now. He lives in a 48l (40L of water) tank. His mates are 2 other pandas and a plattie. possibly 2 fry (don't think they really count).
Over the last few days his tail has started to disappear. At first I saw the plattie sucking at the tail and thought that could be it. The bottom half of the tail went 1st but now it has all gone.
He is also rubbing himself against virtually everything but other than that there are no other obvious physical signs of illness. He has now started to swin irratically ie he swims about on his side alot and struggles at times no nose about in the sand. He still seems relatively happy and calm.
There was a silvery film floating on top of the tank but since I added a nutrafin finrot / fungus treatment this seems to have gone.
I think that fin rot is the cause but he does not seem well at all and I read that if the fungus spreads to the root tail he is a gonner.
Any opinions?
Thanks in advance.
Gareth

Hi Gareth

Are your water stats ok? Just want to check that ammonia or nitrite aren't playing a factor in this.

I would treat with eSHa 2000 which covers fungus, finrot and bacterial infections and is only a 3 day treatment.

My Nitrite is 0
and the nitrate is above 0 but below 10 so nothing to worry about there. (just done a 35% water change.) The test strips I use (I know they are crap) don't test for ammonia but I can't see that this would be a factor as the other fish are fine and the other 2 pandas are smaller (more vunerable to poisoning?)
What factor would you expect that these values may pay to it?

Well if there's any ammonia or nitrite in the water it would poison the fish. Also, poor water quality can cause disease to break out in fish. It's something I always check for first if my own fish get sick before considering which treatment to use.

You could also try melafix along with your current fungus/finrot treatment as it has good healing qualities and may encourage the tail fin to grow back.
