US and UK leters are the same. US gallons and UK gallons are different.

US litres are around 3.8 where the UK litres are 4.5 so the uk gallon is bigger than the us gallon.

Stop with the interchanging of litres and gallons! Litres are a metric unit, not used by the Yanks (generally). Gallons can be US or imperial.

I'm an american, and I am alot more comfortable doing measurements in the metric system. Its just easier for me, but then again i am also a science geek.

I dont think i can bring myself to kill him, but he's definitely too far gone and is suffering. I havent got 'clove oil' which a lot of people suggest, what would be a humane way using just what you'd typically find round the house? I dont want to take him out of the water to suffocate him

I definately wouldn't recomend vodka. I tried it before out of desperation, but it was not fast or peaceful. Any chance of getting out to a health food store?

omg vodka!? just putting him in pure vodka!? i'd rather let him pass his last few hours peacefully rather than do that...

erm, no, all shops will be closed here, you mean to buy clove oil? so whats the deal with that, put some in with the water he's in (obviously in another container), or just put him in pure clove oil? why's it the most humane way, it it quite peaceful for a fish to pass away that way?

No it's not pure vodka you add it to the water, but i don't blame you it's not nice, to be honest clove oil the best method as it put them to sleep.

with clove oil, you put him in a small container with water (by this point he probably can't swim very well to begin wiht. Then mix up some clove oil and water (i shake it in a jar) to get it to mix, then add it to the water. The fish generaly goes to sleep within a minute.
