hi, i have a molly and after doing a water change it turned for the worse. its swim bladder has gone and it twirls round in the water. i have checked for chemicals and its fine. all my other fish are happy. i have it in isolation at the mo but will it survive? can anyone help? thanks

Need a bit more info that this! For example, how big is the tank? Are you keeping your mollies in fresh or brackish water? In freshwater they are considerably more sensitive to nitrite and nitrate than in brackish or saltwater conditions.

Temperature shocks can make fish "loopy", so did you add too much cold water at once?

If it's shock, then the fish should recover if left alone. But if you've got a systemic bacterial infection, chronic constipation, or one of a dozen different things that end up being called "swim bladder disease" then the prognosis is not so good. Remember, mollies are rather delicate fish that need very hard, alkaline water that is spotlessly clean and relatively warm (26-28C). While aquarists endlessly argue about whether they absolutely need the addition of marine salt mix, in my opinion and experience, adding marine salt mix at a dose of 6-9 grammes per litre makes them altogether hardier and easier to keep. Adding marine salt mix certainly never does any harm to them, so to me, it's a "no brainer" where mollies are concerned.

Cheers, Neale

its freshawater. and i had literally just done a water change about a minute before. and it was fine before that so i think it might have just been the cold water. i will wait and see if it recovers or not. thanks m8.

When doing a water change It is best to have the water a few degrees warmer than the fish tank water. it reduces the risks of stressing the fish

You need to treat it with interpet no13, swim bladder treatment.
