Please can someone help? Just this morning my male lyretail has been sat at the bottom of the tank gasping slightly. I have moved him to a hospital tank and treated with a general tonic. Is there anything else I can do to help?

Mate, need loads more info than that.

What type of fish is it - there are at least 3 species of fish that I can think of that have Lyretail variants (there are probably more)
How long has the tank been set up?
How did you cycle the filter (ie grow the bacteria colonies)?
What are your water stats for pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?
How big is the tank (volume and dimensions)?
What else is in the tank?
Have you added anything else to the tank recently (living or otherwise)
How often do you do water changes, and how much do you change?
Have you put any chemicals in the water recently?

Help us to help you!

Edit: When I refer to your tank, I mean the tank he was originally in, not the quarantine tank.

It's 260l juwel vision and has been set up for over 8 months. Only added some bog wood and some plants last week. No new fish. I just know he is a lyretail sword?! I have two others and they seem ok. Did a water test and all is fine, no alterations to my usual perfect results. Do a weekly water change of around 30-40% and I havnt added any chemicals. Hence why I am abit confused :)

Funnily enough lyretail swordtail wasn't one of the three species I'd thought of.

What type of fish is it? Lyretail swordtail
How long has the tank been set up? 8 months
How did you cycle the filter (ie grow the bacteria colonies)?
What are your water stats for pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?
How big is the tank (volume and dimensions)? 260l
What else is in the tank? 2 other swordtails
Have you added anything else to the tank recently (living or otherwise) plants and bogwood
How often do you do water changes, and how much do you change? Weekly 30%
Have you put any chemicals in the water recently? None

Hope you don't mind that I've summarised like that.

"Fine" as a set of water stats doesn't really help I'm afraid, I assume it means 0ppm for ammonia and nitrite, but doesn't tell me your level for nitrate, and it doesn't tell me what your pH is. Also you didn't tell me how you'd cycled.

When a fish reacts like that and there are no visible signs as to why (I assume you'd have mentioned anything obvious), it's often down to water quality problems - whether historical or immediate.

Also, how come there's only 3 fish in a tank like that?

There isnt just 3 fish, I was just saying I have other lyretails lol. My stocking is: 5 rosy barbs
5 Bosami rainbows
2 dwarf rainbows
2 silver sharks
3 lyretails
2 guppies
2 female fighter
1 medium angel
1 small angel
1 blue acara
1 juvi gibby plec
2 pearl gourami

I did a a fish in cycle two years a go in a small tank and transferred media over to this tank and slowly built up the fish.
My ph is betwenn 7 and 7.5 which is normal for me, yes ammonia is 0ppm, nitrite is 0 and nitrate is around 5ppm.

Sounds like a "no" to water issues then. It could possible be a stress problem. Keep a close eye on the tank - see whether any of the other fish are getting aggressive towards him, the sharks especially can be quite aggressive little blighters.

If it were a female, then it might also be impending birth, but he's not.

I think the blue acara may have started to chase a few fish at feeding time as its getting bigger, maybe thats the problem, I shall keep an eye on them. Thanks
