got some black kuhlis about a week ago and they were doing very well until yesterday when I noticed that they had become lethargic (practically overnight), they also have red kills and a buildup of slime.

i don't want to medicate without knowing what it is, but equally difficult is the fact that i know kuhlis re sensitive to meds. any thoughts on what to do?

(they are in a QT tank, and water stats are all in the clear)

Red kills suppose you mean gills, sound like a parasite like gill flukes with the slime build up, can get excess mucas with that.
Just post stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, just to make sure in not water quality first.

ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate low (my cards read from 0-.25ppm so it's more than 0, but less than .25)

yes, i meant gills. I was tired and typing with one hand because the other is in a cast. Anyhow, the mucus seems to be built up around the body of the fish rather than the gills, does that matter when pertaining to the gill flukes? also is formaline/malachite green okay for loaches?
