Hi all,
I have a sick guppy that I have moved from a 29 gal tank with problems to a 5 gal established tank to get it out of the 29 to help I hope. I had to take a couple of other fish out of that 29 gal tank also, so I also have two adult platy’s in there, one of which is preggo..and giving me many fry from time to time, So there are 3 adult fish in the 5 gal with 2 platy fry. The platy’s are recovering fine but the yellow guppy is not.
The fish in the 5 gal came from a situation with the 29 gal with levels of ammonia and nitrites that became too high. I have been doing Prime, I also have Amquel Plus. The current readings today on the 29 gal are:
Ammonia: .25 ppm
Nitrite: 2.0 ppm
Nitrate: 5.0 ppm
The levels were higher earlier in the week, the guppy just couldn’t take it.
I still have 3 guppies in the 29 gal that are better than they were when the levels were slightly higher, and a partial (50%) water change last night. I was unsure about whether to do more water changes in that tank, and “mess up” cycling, but they do seem better from the change.
My tap water (with filter media) before being treated is not good.
Ammonia: 1.0 ppm
Nitrite: 2.0 ppm
After treated not much better but maybe I didn’t wait long enough to see results on this test, because the water does rectify itself with my other tanks.
Shortly after using Prime for example the water readings are:
Ammonia: .50 ppm
Nitrite: 1.0 ppm
OK now to the sick yellow guppy housed in the 5 gal. tank. It’s wavering around,, just doesn’t move right. Hard to describe exactly. It’s not just hanging out at the top or bottom anymore it does swim, but it seems neurologically damaged.
Is there any medicine or anything I can do for it to help recovery? It’s been in the 5 gal established tank for 2 days. From the high ammonia and nitrites of the 29 gal, it was weak and just got worse.
Thanks much.. Catbird
