My flame gourami is going through the same stages as the last one I had (a few months ago, different tank)
He is sitting in the corner of the tank up at the surface, breathing heavily. All my other fish are fine, and I had my water tested today (it was fine, showed 80 for hardness, whatever that means, but other than that it was ok)

Is this normal behaviour for a gourami that has a 'mysterious bacterial infection' and is about to die?
Should I put him out of his misery now?

I also just noticed a white patch on his back. Not spots like Ich, but a small patch.

I just lost two of my dwarf gouramis to a viral disease that's incurable and inherent in this species. I would think the spot on your will grow and then the fish will just die. I still have 2 males and one female that are fine. The other two died within a day of each other and I hadn't had them for more than 3 weeks, so I suspect they came from the LFS that way.
