Sick Gourami

My gourami seems sick, but I cant diagnose whats wrong with him. He's just sitting at the bottom of this little cave, breathing hard, and not moving. Earlier he was laying down on his side at the bottom and my pleco came over and tried to eat him! ....I cant get a clear look at him because he wont come out of his cave. But his body looks darker than normal, and his scales dont look healthy. My younger gourami recently died, from symptoms similar to this. I dont want to lose this one too! >.<

What are your stats, i.e, P.H and Nitrite?
How Long U been cycling the tank for?
I could be wrong but it sounds like Nitrite poisoning to me.
