just to let you know the sick goldie died last night, very sad, just before I went to bed I went to check on him, and he was at the bottom of the tank hardly moving, with his mouth open, I went in later and no gill or ey movement, so i removed him to a bowl, (just in case) but he is a goner, my daughter was upset this morning, very sad.

I vow to make life better for the remaining fish and am thinking about getting a bigger tank, and moving it to the lounge, and maybe getting him a friend, its not ideal having a fish in my sons room, he is away at Uni now, and the filter is a bit noisy in a bedroom all night.

Anyway thanks for all your advice, we are going to bury him today, in our garden.

RIP little fish :(

oh i'm sorry to hear that. but at least he's not suffering anymore. at least you can be safe in the knowledge that you did what you could for him. :rip:

and i'm glad you're making moves to improve things for the other goldie, if you need any help you know where we are.

thanks everyone, just got back with my test kit, going to check the tank this afternoon, probably be back on here after I have got results!!
Still trying to get my head round the whole thing, cycling, etc.

you're in the right place, asking for help, listening to advice and trying to learn. no one can ask or expect any more of you than that. :D

ok, just done my tests, took ages to get the silly caps open!! anyway can you have a look at these,
PH 7.4, nitrate 0, nitrate 5, and ammonia 0.
How do they sound

which one of those is nitrIte and which is nitrAte. good that you've no ammoia though and the pH is fine. :good:

ok, nitrate 2 is 0, nitrate 3 is 5, does that help, what is the differance between the 2 nitrates and how does it effect the water, still a bit confused

there's NitrIte (with an 'I') which is also called NO2 then there's nitrAte (with an 'A') which is also called NO3.

There was a link i posted you on your help thread which explained about the different levels and cycling. :good:

Basically nitrite is very bad and you shouldn't have any, nitrate is fine in realtivley small quantities but you should try and keep it under 40 or so.

ok, I now understand, how often should i check my tank now that the sick fish is no longer in it, and waht size tank do you reccomend for 1 goldfish, about 3inches long, excluding tail.
I would imagine that the tank wont smell as much as it used to, i used to blame my teenage son for the smell, lol, but now I know if I was washing out the full the tank and getting rid of old sponge filter, why it smelt so bad, I used to do this every 3 weeks or so, no wonder the goldfish became so hardy, its amazing they never died!!
