iv got a 30 gallon with 12 goldfish in it(yes i know its over stocked please dont yell at me for it). it has been up for over a year now, and just had the filter switched to a bigger filter than they had. at the moment i no longer have a test kit so i cant say what the stats are for the tank yet i will take a water sample into my lfs to have it tested on my way into school. i can how ever tell you the temperature is about 65F. thismorning i noticed my favorite shubunkin sitting vertically (head up) just afew inches off the bottom of the tank. when i chesked on him he swam away just fine, which led me to notice one of me other golds stuck to the filter intake dead. it didn't look like there was anything wrong with him, and i know they were all alive when i went to bed last night. then i noticed about 1/2 of my golds have a white film on the edges of thier fins. most of the fish with this white film seemed to not want to move much, but every fish that i in the tank is more than willing to eat. i did a 30% water change immediatly, but does anyone know what it could be?? im not sure if this helps or not but about 4-5 years ago the tank was set up for golds, and every single one of them came up with some sort of infection or something that caused them to have a whiteish film cover almost thier entire body. with those fish it came i treated it with what i was told to at the time( i dont remember what i used) then it would go away for afew days then come back worse than the time before til it took all of those fish. if omeone could help me with these guys it would be much appreciatted.

please dont yell at me for the tank being over stocked i was going on what i was told so many times before.

Well there could be a few determinant factors to this. You may actually have high ammonia if there are that many goldfish in the tank. That could contribute some. Also what type of filter do you have on your tank at the moment?? After the last time the tank was used was it cleaned out very well?? Have you added any fish lately?

i just got back from my lfs and all they told me was that the amonia was high, aswell as the nitrate or nitrite. she never told me what the readings were, and i forgot to have her write them down. however she told me to use some amonia remover made by top fin...... also when i set the tank up after it had set i did clean it out with hot water and viniger like i had been told to do so many times before. i also used new gravel and plants. does anyone have any ideas that can help them??

That tanks way overstocked.
The first goldfish alone needs a 20 gallon tank then 10 gallons for every other goldifsh added.
They are massive waste producers and need excellent filters.
You need to rehome the goldfish a product is not the answer you will never get good water quality in overstocked tank.

Then the problem probably is that your tank is not cycled. And it probably will not cycle with so many goldfish. Trust me I am having the same problem. There was to many goldfish in a tank and the tank just didn't cycle when they were put in. I had to do water changes and that did help so then i ended up re-doing the whole tank. Try adding some chemicals like A.C.T. made by Mardel or Stress Zyme made by API. These should help get your cycle going, if it's not already to late. Also do water changes to help some things out too!! Good Luck

Since the tank is extremely overstocked and goldfish are massive waste producers there is too much ammonia (also because the tank isn't cycled) and the poop in the tank makes worse water quality, which makes them stressed, which makes them more vulnerable to diseases (especially bacterial) . Is the film only on the fins, or also over the body? Try shining a flashlight over the goldfish, do you see anything unusual, like a coating? If so, it might be velvet. Any other symptoms?
