Hi, I have one sick redeye tetra. He has fungus, and his fins and scales are in bad shape. There is a white fuzz on his fins and some scales. I want to save him but my budget is very tight after my roommate left with little notice. I have a 10g quarantine tank. Will a 30 minute salt bath be a good idea? I have heard it works for some external infections.

I have treated this fish twice with kanaplex. He got much better during treatment but never fully recovered. I did dose kanaplex for 8 days, not the 3 days the label suggested. I will use salt if it is a good idea because it is cheep. I will consider using marcin I and II at the same time if that is recomended....

I did remove carbon during treatment....

Thanks

Salt can help, but watch him carefully durring treatment as some tetras can be sensitive to additives.

It sounds like you have columnaris, which is a bacterial infection (not fungus). To help treat this successfully, increase airation, and also turn down the heater as this bacteria thrives in warm water. You will need an antibiotic for this disease, Maracyn is one of the recomended ones.

this is interesting, everything i have read always says use maracyn, which is what i use. Even the maracyn box says it is for columnaris. I searched online, and everythign i am finding says columnaris is gram negative, but maracyn treats gram positive.

I know alot of americans add maracyn two as well to cover all areas.

Maracyn
