Please help me with my platy:

Request Help

Tank size: 148 litres / approx 39 gallons
pH: 7
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 20-30
kH: I've never tested this
gH: This either
tank temp: 25 degrees C

Volume and Frequency of water changes: About 35-40% every week, week and a half

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: AP Tap Water conditioner, plant food. My filtration is a Aquaclear 200/50 HOB, and a UGF.

Tank inhabitants:
3x Pearl Gourami
4x Platy (1M 3F)
10x Cardinal Tetra
4x Bronze/Albino Cories
Some pond snails (grr)
About 20-30 2-week old platy fry in a breeder net. These fry did not come from the sick fish in question.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): N/A except for adding a thin extra layer of new filter floss to the filter (did not remove any media already in there, just squeezed in old tank water to clean)

Exposure to chemicals: Added some Wardley Sprout plant food last water change (week ago). Have previously added plant food before with no ill effects.

Digital photo (include if possible): N/A. Physically the fish looks fine, its behaviour is the problem.

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

My problem is a yellow twinbar female platy who has started acting odd as of yesterday. I've had this fish for about 6 months, always been healthy and robust, and has had a few drops of fry. All of a sudden she is hiding, and resting on the bottom. She is coming out and swimming around on occasion (and at feeding time) but I've noticed her swimming is a little bit wobbly, like her head kind of wobbles as she swims. Not really clamped. I fed peas last night to make sure it wasn't just a constipation thing but there's really no change today (I know she ate some). :(

I thought she might have had a tiny white spot on her tail yesterday, but I can't see it again today so I don't know whether it was just my eyes playing tricks on me. All the other inhabitants seem fine - the male platy is hiding a little bit more, saw him flick once the other day but other than that nothing.

The tank has experienced one bout of whitespot about 2-3 months ago which I treated effectively using two courses of Protozin. First noticed it on platies then too. My only other problem was a couple of weeks ago I had a platy die of what I think was internal parasites - she got skinny, swam wobbly, hid (although it hid in top corners, never on the bottom), clamped, and was picked on by others.

I don't know whether I may be seeing the beginnings of whitespot (although last time the fish didnt show this behavior) or whether the fish may be coming down with parasites like my one that died. If it is, I want to catch it quick this time so I don't lose another one. But this fish isn't all skinny yet.

I plan to do about a 50% water change now, and then treat with something - I thought either Waterlife Protozin again or Sterazin, but I can't decide based on my symptoms. Not sure how this might effect my fry too... Someone might have other ideas, other meds I have are Myxazine, Pimafix and Melafix. I hope by the time I come back from the water change someone will have some advice for me! Please!
:dunno:

Thankyou

They can flick with internal parasites.
With a fish going skinny I would get this med.
Does the anus look enlarged or red and inflamed.
What does it look like when the fish go to the toilet.

Hey Wilder :)

She's NOT going super skinny yet - I only suspected internal parasites because that's what I had that previous fish die of some weeks ago (who went grossly anorexic looking). I just thought if it was the same thing I'd like to catch it quickly. It's so hard to judge with female platy's that have been pregnant because they're tummies are stretched out all the time  but she hasn't been pregnant in ages and I guess while looking fat from the side, she's maybe not so much from the above.

Her butt looks fine - haven't seen her poop today but yesterday it seemed normal - especially after I'd fed peas.

I'm in Australia, Wilder, I don't think that med is available to me. Here is where I buy most of my meds:
https://www.theaquariumshop.com.au/shopdisp...cat=Medications and is probably a good indicator of what else I can get.
Sterazin (which I do have here) is in the parasite section - with the time difference you probably won't get back to this for 20 hours or so - so what I will do is I'll put a dose of the Sterazin in now. If I lose my fry I guess I'll have to lose them - there's always more! So, if you get back to this, if you think I should do something else please tell me. I just want to get started with SOMETHING.

Today she's still resting on the bottom a lot, and doing the wobbly head thing when she swims....:(

Go for the fluke and tapeworm med.
Don' beother with the waterlife med Sterazin its no good on internal parasites.
Internal parasites cause alot of damage to the insides of the fish resulting in bacteria infections on top.
Sometimes the med can be to late if there infested with them.
I would definately get an internal parasite med.
Good luck.

The Aqua Master tablets that are so wonderfully out of stock?

Cheers Wilder

Since there's nothing helpful on my online shop, I'll have to see If I can get outto the LFS (it's a fair hike) but that won't be for a few days.

I'll throw the Sterazin in just in case, you never know....:dunno:

Good luck.

She's really starting to get skinny - her big fat female platy belly looks like it's all hollowed out. She continually sits on the bottom hiding in a cave and kind of shudders. Is still coming out for food though.

I've been dosing with the Sterazin but it's proving useless.

I've found another fluke/tapeworm thing on my online store:
https://www.theaquariumshop.com.au/shopexd....+Tablets+25%27s

Would this do the job just as well as this one that was out of stock?

I wouldn't be able to treat the whole tank though, it says don't use on tetras, and I have 10 cardinals. I can put her in my betta tank and temporarily put the betta in a breeder net or something.

What do you think?
