All,
I purchased some neon tetras 6 days ago, they were doing fine and within 2 days I noticed that some of them had some white fluff on their dorsal fin. On some I noticed that the white fluff was also on the body where the dorsal fin is attached.
I assumed that it was caused by Flexibacter columnaris since I treated a similar case with my platys about a week prior to this with some Melafix and it worked just fine, I figured it was a recurrance. I put some Melafix in the tank.
Next day (yesterday) I went to the store and bought some Maracyn and treated the whole tank. When I came home from the store 1 tetra died and later that night another died. Last night I also noticed my platy was acting strange it was swimming alone at the top almost drifting, I could see it's mouth moving, every now and then it would swim to the mid level of the tank. The next morning my wife found the platy dead, so I told her to keep it in a bowl of water so that I can examine it. I looked at it when I came home from work and found that it had some white fluff around the mouth and some on the dorsal fin. I wasn't sure if it was Flavibacter or just the natural slime coating on the fish coming off since it was sitting in the bowl of tank water of 9 hours before I examined it. When I came home another tetra was found dead.
So now I had 1 tetra and 1 platy dead after I administered the Maracyn. I figured that the Maracyn would kick in and have a healing effect. Now I am not sure whether this white stuff is fungus or Flavibacter. My other fish (guppies, platys, corys, clown loaches, zebras, and gouramis) are doing fine except for the tetras.
I was started treating with Melafix on Monday and started Maracyn yesterday (Wednesday). I am continuing to use both. Am I treating the wrong stuff? Is my diagnosis of Flavibacter correct? Is it fungus? Is it possible to treat for both fungus & Flavibacter without really stressing my fish and damaging the biological filter?
Here are my current water parameters:
Ammonia - 0 ppm
Nitrite - < 0.25 ppm
dH - 8
pH - 7.37
I have a 75 gallon moderately planted tank that I am treating, I don't have a hospital tank. On Sunday, a day after I got my tetras, I started a CO2 injection system, my CO2 is about 11 ppm calculated this morning & I noticed 2 days ago that algae growth on my glass is getting a bit much. Today I did a 20% water change to dilute the nitrite & wiped the algae off. I remember that when I treated my platy a week previous to this episode, the nitrate level was pretty high, much higher than the current level. I tested the ammonia & nitrite levels a day after the tetras were in my tank, both read 0 ppm.
Thanks in advance for your help.
