Hello. one of my leopard danios is sick. He looks physically ok,no signs of disease.I noticed him missing yesterday, when I found him,he looked drunk, swimming erratically, darting then falling.Today I found him vertical, in a plant. I was sure he'd gone.I got my net,to retrieve him,and he swam off, again, unsteady.I have him in a floating plastic box,as one of the danios would not leave him alone. He does not move, resting on the bottom, sometimes at 45% angle. He looks bad.My tank is 55 litres,I have 2 guppies,3 danios,5 rasboras. My readings are Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 5, Ph 7. My Nitrate yesterday was 50, and I did a 50% water change. My tank is approx 10 weeks old ( actually 3 months ) I hate to see him suffer, any ideas.I know you have little to go on, he was as happy as Larry 2-3 days ago

When they dart around the tank it can mean there dying aswell as other things.
Darting means bad water quality, parasite, toxins in the tank, overdose of meds, stray voltage.
Can he maintain his balance in the water.
Does he look bloated.
Check his gills over to see if there pale with excess slime or red and inflamed.
Any excess mucas on his body of the fish..
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.

When he was free to roam, he could swim, for short bursts erratically ( when the other Danio was pestering) then sank.He is in a small plastic floating box now.He is not bloated. His gills look ok,no excess mucous. To be perfectly honest,he looks exactly the same as the 2 healthy danios. While he is contained, yes he does appear to be flicking and rubbing, but as you know danios like to be active,so it may be that its just the fact that he is restricted. Sorry i can't give you any specific irregularities, he is very still, when disturbed, he swims like on his side, ( bit of rubbing )stops and sinks. Cheers for the help

He dosn't sound like he's going to make it.
If he rubbing he could have a parasite, and parasites cause bacterial infections.
Keep on eye on your other fish for signs of flicking and rubbing, excess slime on there bodies
Keep an eye on the gills for being pale with excess mucas or red and inflamed gills.
Erratic swimming can be parasites, swim bladder, toxin, stray voltage, bad water quality, overdose of meds.

Does his body look like a greyish white film.

Many thanks for your reply. These parasites, where do they come from, other fish, new plants. I only commented the other day,how happy my fish looked, then this.Bugger. I thought my fish would last a long time. Anyhow, he's not gone yet, will see tomorrow. Cannot abide suffering, would rather put the lights out. Cheers Wilder

Not nice I know he sounds in bad shape.
If you think he's suffering you just get a jug of very cold water and add ice cubes till it freezing cold.
Add the fish to the jug it won't take long about 20 seconds, leave him in ten minutes just to make sure he passed on.

Parasites can come on plants and fish.
All fish carry a few flukes abit like a kat with fleas, it when there stressed there start to do the damage, young fish are more suspectable to flukes.

Well,he is still alive. To my knowledge he is not eating. He looks a bit livelier, when you go near the tank he bombs round the small breeding/floating box he is in,probably in fear at being contained. When he is still,he is either pointing upwards or downwards or leaning at a 45% angle. Should I give him longer, should I release him back into the main tank.Should i treat him with anything. When i got up this morning he was on his side at the surface,in a way i was relieved, thinking he was gone, and then blow me down with a feather he started swimming. Thanks

sounds like his swimbladder isnt working...maybe the high nitrate level sparked it. if it was parasites the other fish would show the flicking. keep an eye on the nitrates and do water changes as and when required. he might get better he might not but keeping him in a breeding trap is just adding to the stress imo

Thanks for the reply,I only put him in the trap, because, one of the other Danios, was hassling him, I will let him out.
