I bought a betta for my sons tank yesterday and this morning we woke up to find one of his eyes is all white and he is just sitting at the bottom

any idea what this is and how to treat it
thanks

it sounds like the water quality is not good. Do a 50% water change each day for a week using dechlorinated water that has a similar temperature and PH to the tank. Don't feed the fish for a couple of days.

ammonia and nitrate are o
did a 30% water change today

it is filtered and heated

35l with 4 phantom tetras that are waiting to go into my larger tank... they have been in there for 3 weeks with no probs

That should have read nitrite

if the water quality is ok then it is possible he damaged the eye somehow and it is a bit infected. Normally the eyes heal up quickly without medication but if there is no improvement in a couple of days, then you might need to invest in some broad spectrum medication or a general purpose antibiotic for him.

If you do need to medicate the fish then it is preferable to do it in a seperate container so the medications don't wipe out the good filter bacteria. But see how he does first, he will probably be fine in a day or so.

Some people use Melafix for situations like this. It apparently does not harm the filter bacteria but can help the fish.

Ok ta colin

will get some meds on monday
but it looks like the side of his face is going white now

i will see how he is tommorow and might take him back to the lfs tommorow as i dont want him infecting my tetras with something

well i found him dead this morning
bought him on sat dead on mon... very quick
bit worrried about getting another fish now but my son really wants one
the other phantom tetras are doing fine and the water stats are good

sorry to hear about your betta nicnac. Keep a close eye on your tetras. I'm not sure when you are planning to move them to the other tank, but if the other tank already has other fish it's probably best to keep the tetras where they are for a couple of weeks to check they haven't caught anything from the betta

No littlest, the other tank is cycing so no other fish in it yet.... should be cycled soon though. Then im going to cycle my biggest tank a 215 litre one...... so 3 tanks and only 4 fish ... lol

my oh keeps saying, thats a lovely tank of water

when your betta died, did it have white "fluffy" patches on it, becasue if so then it is most likely a fungal infection, and there is a high risk of other fish catching it...

No jelly,no fluffy bits... its eye went white and when i found him dead the next morning he seemed to have paled alot but no fluff
