My tank does have lots of hiding places beneath plants and even two caves - would it be suitable to house a male fighter in my community tank in this scenario?

It all depends on what type of fish you want to keep with him. But to be honest male fighters do best in a tank on their own. I have four which all have their own 5g tanks and they are perfectly fine. One of the males has a couple of ottos in his tank and he doesn't bother them.

Well i've read up that he'd be okay with cory's so i am guessing that is true - if there's any problems it's fine to take him back though :)

You're right, he will be fine with cories. Like the ottos, they won't bother each other at all. Good choice on the fighter, they really are a beautiful fish. Hope you don't get addicted like most Betta keepers, once you've brought one you just have to get another!

Hi

Well I have to say, I have a fighter in a community tank, and he has no problems with any of the other fish, he just does his own thing and sits at the front of the tank 'wagging' his tail looking for attention. I think you just have to be careful which fish you decide to choose to keep with them and not have territorial species that may offend

Well i'm just hoping he is compatible with my 4 sunset platys they are leaving him alone and occasionally come to him and he just raises his fins a little then they go down.

He seems to love swimming around near the heater - i think i have one that likes to keep himself to himself :) - like yours

they can mix ok with other fish but they are all individuals so people will vary on what they say.
I would say avoid adding a betta to a tank with anything prone to fin nipping and also to a tank with anything that looks vaguely like a betta such as something with flowing finage like a male guppy. Also mine used to have a go at anything that swam near the surface, eg gouramis and hatchet fish.
Adding a betta can be the fastest route to getting a second tank and then you are well on the way to multiple tank syndrome - BEWARE.

So you mean i may be tempted to get more than one tank? lol

Hey... Man bettas go great in other tanks as long as their are no other Gouramis or male bettas, I've got mine in with 4 angles, a clown loach, a peppered corry cat, and an algea eater and he gets along with everybody, as long as their aren't that man "flashy colors" that attract his attention and spark his agression, like rams or discus, you should be alright in a community tank I had my first betta with a school of neon tetras,2 female guppies and a male guppy in a 15gallon and he didn't bother a soul :D good luck!
