Yesterday I was bought a siamese fighter (male). The guy in the acquarium shop said he would most probably hide. Since yesterday afternoon he has stayed at the very top of the acquarium. Is this natural?

Your aqaurium may not have sufficient dissolved oxygen in the water for your betta to thrive. Try and aim your filter towards the surface to adgitate it a bit more. How long has your tank been set up for? Has it been cycled??

how long has the aquarium been set up? Does it seem to be gasping for air?

... Bettas breathe from the surface, and turning the filter up would only create more stress from the current.

Bettas aren't great community fish- they don't like current or other fish.

how big is your tank?

Betta's are pretty aggresive towards other fish of similar size, and colourful fish. Also if it's with something small and nippy such as tetra's they can sometime's nip at the betta's flowing fins.

bettas have an organ which allows them to breathe air as we do, if the current is strong in you tank that would issolate him to a certain area of the tank as they dislike current. also as said they aren't good community fish and do much better in a tank to themselves. what other fish do you have with him? and test results as has been requested

bettas should be by the surface 3/4 of the time. and there should be almost no surface agatation for bettas
