I'm thinking of gettting a siamese algae eater to help with any algae in the tank.  I have a 35 gallon tall hex community tank.   I have heard that another type of algae eater,   chinese algae eaters,  can sometimes eat the slime coat of other fish.   Do siamese algae eaters do this too?

Those of you who are familiar with the siamese algae eater---do you see any problems that may arise with this fish in a community tank?

I had a pair of SAE and they got along great with the other fish. Mostly they tagged along with my Corys on the bottom of the tank :) Kept the algae away!

my sae are great and get along with everything else I have, the chinese algae eater you are talking about are a sucker fish and they will go after other fish, sae are not sucker fish and don't do that.

I am thinking of getting just one of these to help with the algae so that I can have other fish in my community tank and not be overstocked.    Are there any negatives to having just one in my tank.   As it's a tall hex  tank, the floor of the tank is smaller than rectangular 35 gallon tanks.

It's fine to just have one however they closely resemble Chinese algae eaters and those start going after the other fish in the tank. And they get like 6 inches so be careful what you purchase. Don't trust the LFS to know what it is. I speak from experience.

I'm buying from Liveaquaria.com.  I think they're more experienced than most LFS.  Chinese algae eaters as someone mentioned has a sucker-type mouth---the siamese algae eater doesn't.

LOL. This is too funny. I wouldn't be so sure. I just got a shipment from Liveaquaria.com today. I was supposed to get a Halimeda SW plant and got a 5 inch long sea slug instead!!!

They are a reputable company and I am sure that it was one of those fluke mistakes. Everything I got was extremely healthy and well packed!

where are you located in the US---I'm waiting till next week to order my fish as it's still very cold here---warmup due next week

I live in Ohio. It was below 0 on Monday and got to 20F today. They pack them very well with heat pads. My stuff was in a Styrofoam box that was packed with packing peanuts and a heat pad that was still quite warm to the touch. They shipped out at 6PM last night and arrived at my door at 9:30AM this morning. I got an emerald crab, a saltwater clam, a freshwater clam and what ended up being a sea hare. Everything was very active when I took the bags out and everything is acting normal in my tanks right now. They also send an acclimation guide with instructions on floating acclimation and drip acclimation that work really well.

I thought about waiting till next week but I am the most impatient person EVER!
