Are there any shrimps that will thrive in a brackish aquarium?
If so are they available in the uk?

At the LFS they have Ghost Shrimp in a brakish tank, and they all seem to do fine, i don't know if you can get them in the UK tho.

you can keep river shrimp in brackish tanks.

i kept them in my tank for a while until they were finally eaten.

i keep my bamboo also known as wood shrimp in my brackish tank with my cichlids and and arowanna and they ve been fine for a half a year. and thats as long as ive had them about them being in the uk im not sure

eh petey you have no brackish fish in yer sig
plus you have plecos in both tanks there shouldn't be any salt

and sorry off topic but i hope those tanks aren't longterm if that was the plan maybe ask for some advice on them in the african section

ive had salt in those tank for years and nothings ever gone wrong. plus africans love some salt in the water. Everyone else i know, adds salt to their african tanks too.

What kind of salt? There is a difference in aquarium salt and marine salt. Either way plecos do not like salt.

JRT the only shrimp I've dealt with are ghost shrimp, yes they are brackish, but very small, and most fish would just eat them...

aquarium salt .
Just so you are clear, using aquarium salt is fine for convict, and many other types of fish. This does not mean you have a brackish water tank. Brackish requires marine salt (just in smaller quantities then a full marine tank)

Plecos however do not like any salt... be it marine or aquarium salt. If you want more info, search this forum or google it. You may say your plecos are fine, but you are indeed stressing them out, and shortening their life span.

Sorry for being off topic here.

Arowanas are not brackish fish either and should not be kept in salted water unless it is short term for medicinal benefits.

As said brackish requires marine salt and usually has a SG of between 1.005 and 1.018, just to bring the SG up to 1.005 from 1.000 (FW) takes several tablespoons of salt per gallon, much more than i would imagine you are adding to your tanks.

On Topic - I have kept river/ghost shrimp in with my F8 at an sg of 1.007, they looked perfectly healthy before they were puffer food.

Petey, this extract from PFK this month may help.
The word Brackish is sometimes misused or misunderstood....
The term is also occasionally confused with hard water. For instance, lake Malawi and Tanganyika are hard and alkaline with high mineral content; but they are freshwater lakes, not brackish at all.
In fact, lake Malawi contains almost no detectable sodium, which is a principle component of seawater (and hence brackish environments). Commercial salts for african cichlids are, therefore, quite different to marine salt.
