Went to my LFS today to pick up a few Trumpet Snails as I've heard they might help clear some of my algae and generally help keep the gravel clean. Well, I ended up coming home with 4 snails but also with a couple of shrimps that captured my interest. They seem to have settled into their new home very quickly and are fascinating to watch as they search out every nook & cranny and clamber across the plants, but I don't know what particular type of shrimp they are. One is approx. 5cm in length and the other around 6cm. Any idea what variety?

BTW, I thought the snails were supposed to bury themselves in the gravel and be barely seen, not share dinner with my Peppered Corys :D

Their not the common Malaysian Trumpet Snail or MTS

That's the "yellow rabbit snail" from the sulawesi island which grow's much larger.
No idea whats their breeding habbit's are like but would suspect their slow unlike the MTS which drive me mad!

Okay, thanks for that, I'll google those later...hope they don't grow too big! You don't happen to know what variety of shrimp that is, do you?

Their a long arm of some sort but no idea. i had one which produced baby shrimplets but none survived in my tank.

Oh and the snail will get to 2" or so but look quite large already.

If your thinking of chucking the snails I will take them off your hands :good: just thought I would get that in their first I can send you MTS in return if you want. Not sure on the shrimp look like a colour morph of "green shrimp" (they come in all colours just green is most popular) however the long claws make think machrobrachium or paleomonetes, paleo's are nice machros are generally satan nipping everything they are in the tank with.

Keep an eye on those shrimp, they may try to munch your snails or fish. The snails might be plant eaters as well, but I'm not sure; I know some others from sulawesi have been confirmed as such.

OMG, I thought I'd bought shrimp that would just feed from leftovers in the substrate and a variety of snail that won't eat live plants but might help reduce my algae. But, the reality might be that my shrimps are carniverous and my snails will munch away on all my plants :(

As regards the snails, it shows just how useless doing research can be if your LFS can't even identify their own stock correctly. I'll have to go in armed with a photo printed of the net next time!

Sorry to be the bearer of potential bad news. Those snails are rather cool, if that helps at all. The shrimp could be rehomed in a small tank if you want to keep them.

This is what a true trumpet(Melanoides tuberculata) looks like.

Yup you made a double fail there. Apparently the rabbit snails eat some plants but not others. Those macro shrimps will defo try and eat smaller fish though. They look cool as hell though.

Yup, a couple of dodgy decisions. Well, I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I'll have to return the shrimp, the snails or both. I'm just keeping an eye on things at the moment. So far the other fish are fine, though they do seem wary of the shrimp and I've seen one of the snails munching on one of my floating plants, but nothing more yet.
