HI guys,

So, I'm off to the fish shop this morning to get a new tank for my Betta (cos he eating my guppies). I'm also gonna get some stuff to try and sort out the poor guppies fins.

While I'm there is it worth getting a shrimp to help with cleaning the tank? I have
4 catfish
lots of guppies
4 clown loaches (which i am selling cos I know they will grow too large for my tank!)
7 tetras
5 fish that look like tetras with red spodge on head and b/w spotted tails, clear bodies

(you'll have to bear with me as this is an inhereted tank and I am unsure about the types of them all.)

Live plants. Thats it. Should a shrimp be ok?

thx xx

Glad I wasn't the only one confused by the link.....Is there a list of freshwater shrimp that contains the same info? I have been thinking about getting some shrimp as welll, but want to research before I do so.

You shouldn't have any problem with glass/ghost shrimp. I don't see anything on your list that will eat shrimp (other than the betta, but he's moving, right?). Unless you have some sort of very hungry catfish...

I've never kept amano shrimp. I believe they are much more expensive (around here, at least) and more difficult to find (again, in our area).

We usually have 8-10 ghost shrimp in our 20 gallon tank. Sounds like a lot, but they really put very little stress on the tank. And they eat a lot of the "leftovers". We also found that they added a lot of movement to the tank, since they're constantly on the go. I'd suggest getting at least 3 or 4 shrimp, unless the tank is very tiny. Locally we pay between $.25 and $.55 per shrimp.

Good luck,
Pamela

we've got 8 amano's in our 190L... we bought 13 but can only account for 8 at any one time :)

Ours are in a community tank with clown loaches and plecs with no problems.

cometecattle, my tank is 22UK gallons/26US gallons. I have no idea what my catfish are I'm afraid but they are very small and a sivery colour.

Guess I'll be getting the glass/ghost shrimp, sounds like the best one,. Prob start with 4 and see how that goes. I'll need to wait till I've got the other tank running smoothly to let the betta go in.

Thx for the advice.
