i went to a creek here in NZ today and managed to capture around 50 freshwater shrimp so i thought..

turns out that we have a Brackish and fresh species here.

can i slowly introduce them to fresh water? all the ones that i chucked into fresh started dying...so i just randomly salted them to see if theyd be sweet and they looked alot more happyr after that. im really new to brackish ( i didnt even use the right salt) lol

I can't speak for the New Zealand fauna, but in Britain at least the brackish water species of Palaemonetes will last a few days or weeks in freshwater, but that's it. On the other hand, even at a low salinity (say, 10-20% seawater) they are astonishingly hardy and very easy to keep. I maintained a coldwater brackish water tank containing just some shrimps and coldwater gobies (all from the Thames Estuary) and it was a fabulous aquarium, full of activity. Only very simple filtration is needed, and shrimps are total opportunists as far as food goes, and will eat anything. Algae-rich catfish pellets are the ideal, but basically anything will do.

Cheers, Neale

yeh they were dead this morning but i managed to save 20 by adding salt 2 females loaded with eggs.
