I seem to read lot's about the use of (amano?) shrimp in tanks...do you good people use them in your planted tanks?

I saw some available for the first time today...I think they were labelled as yamamoto?

I love them. I have about 10 in my tank. The usually hide but recently I have seen a lot more of them. They cleaned my bogwood up a treat and constantly graze my Sag and Java fern for algae. Yamamoto are Amano shrimp. Do a Google on "Caridina japonica".

we had 13 in our planted 4ft (tanks got taken apart for a house move)

We now have 8 in one tank and 3 in another - I'll be honest - they are poo at eating algae - catfish pellets on the other hand is a different story :)

For them to eat a noticable ammount of algae you would have to starve the fish.

ahhhh..the old 8 names for one thing trick...will take a google, thanks George!

(they look a lot like the shrimp I used to feed my big fat central American cichlids!!!)

shrimp are great! I have 3 amano (at least that's what they told me). My biggest one has doubled in size since I got them. I know some people dont see them much, but I see all 3 of mine evry day (unless they have shed their skin...I hear they hide away for a bit). They are great fun to watch. I think you need lots to help with algae and mine also eat the cat fish food. They are so funny, they grab a bit and run away with it!

I would highly recommend them though :)
