I'm about to recieve this tank: (pictured)

It's about 25-30 litre and is just the glass at the moment.

It's use will be primarily as a Shrimp Tank (poss as a fish quarantine tank for my other 125litre), I may also throw in a Betta or some Neons just because! It will also be planted to accomodate the shrimp.

My questions:

1, I'm trying to find an external filter but the smallest I can see is rated for 60-100 litres, surely this is far too much for a tank this size?

2, Lighting. Again not sure if I need to go for anything in particular given its shape and the fact it will be heavily planted/aquascaped.

3, Substrate. I'm going with sand on this one but just wanted to check if theres one in particular thats suited to a heavily planted shrimp tank?

4, It comes with a plastic tray lid, do I really need a lid on a tank?

Thanks!

1. You're probably not going to find an external filter for a tank of that size. Most of the filters for small tanks are sponge-type filters but you may be able to find a HOB.

3. Sand is fine, the specifics depend on what you're planning on planting in it.

4. A lid will keep evaporation down. They're also required to keep fish from jumping, but it's not an issue with shrimp.

You are proberly best off with a fluval 2 or an eheim aquaball.

Id use play pit sand or kiln dried sand (silica sand) washed extensivly

For the lighting a low wattage aquatic strip light and ballast will be fine

You can easily get these from most lacol fish shops

or have a look on
Aquarist Classifieds you might find thing you want a bit cheaper on there

Hope this helps

for shriimp i would get a elite stingray 15 (replace the cartridges with sponge) - even the smallest shrimplets dont get sucked in

a fluval 2+ or the new u2 would be ok but i'm not sure if the shrimplets would get sucked in
clip on light - 11 watt would be fine
a bag of play sand from argos - brilliant and shrimp love it - you could also get some small pygmy corys to live in it with them (just wash the sand in an old pillow case)

try ebay for the filters they run out pretty cheap

DONT go for neons as the tank is too small
micro rasboras would be excellent in there

hi
arcardia make a small clip on light called the arcpod which is good for your sort of tank. as for a filter sorry im not sure we have a internal fluval 1 in our 40L. as for a lid - if you are planning on keeping shrimp you will need a lid, shrimp are great escape artists and will climb out of your tank - also bettas are also good at jumping so not worth the risk. any aquarium sand will be fine but you will need to rinse it in water and once in the tank it will be murky for around a day:)
