Can you put shrimp in a coldwater tank?
My niece wants smething else in er tank but i werent sure

as long as the temp never dips below 18oC theyll be fine, seeing as most species of shrimp are cold water anyway

good species:
cherry shrimp
amano shrimp
ghost shrimp

The shrimp will be fine at this temperature but it isn't high enough for them to be able to breed.

When you say something else do you already have fish in the tank?

Goldfish will eat most shrimp.

Yes she has fantails and danios
Will that cause a problem then?

Fantails tend to be one of the largest of the fancy goldfish types and will happily eat anything that fits into their mouths, so probably not a good idea. :p

Shrimp are probably best left to a planted tropical/subtropical tank; they seem to do better in densely planted tanks with lots of hiding places and gentle current that is hard to achieve with goldfish.

no it isnt, just buy some large plants that will do well in cooler water

The Fantail goldfish will eat shrimp the size of cherry shrimp, and possibly even amano. The shrimp may avoid being eaten for a while but im sure they will end up as dinner eventually, probably when they moult.

Basically they will eat anything that fits in their mouth and after seeing how wide they can open their mouths in the lfs today it will need to be quite a big Amano to avoid being eaten.

As others have said, the Shrimp are likely to become a snack.
They are also sensitive to poor water quality which sometimes occurs with keeping fancies.
Real plants are unlikely to last long with goldfish as they tend to eat them.

So not the best idea then?
I will tell her, she will have to think of something else

I would have thought the current preferred by a hillstream loach would be too strong for fantails.

Have you thought about apple snails? You can get them in different colours and I have some in my tanks which are run at around 19-20 degrees :D

I also plant up my tanks with elodea. The fish eat it a bit but it grows like mad and is cheap to replace :D
