Have just had a though, I added 10 shrimp the other day, but they have had very little effect on the thread algae and I am losing them at a rate of about 1-2 per day. I have since noticed I've got a small bit of BGA in there too. Few quick questions/thoughts

1) Can/does BGA get thread like? There is a strong flow in the tank, could that be 'pushing' it into strands?
2) Could BGA be poisonous to shrimp? If there is nothing else in the tank they might be forced to east the BGA? They go into a fit and then die! Most disturbing!
3) Could shrimp be being killed by something else? No new plants for ages so cant be copper treatment on new plants?

Any thoughts greatly appreciate.

Out of the 5 I put in my main tank, 1 died within 3 days, and I now have no idea how many I have left. I am fairly sure there are 3, but they are rarely seen except at water changes.

Could be a dodgy batch maybe? I am guessing you acclimatised them OK, I did mine over 1.5 hours, gradually adding small amounts of tank water to the bag.

Yeh usual acclimation, and they were from MA who Ive had lots and lots of shrimp from in the past all very long lived (for shrimp anyway!), but you're right it could be a dodge batch, cost me 20quid as well!

1. Yes, BGA does get thread like. Mines doing it lol
2. I doubt its killing your shrimps. Although it is a type of bacteria (cyanobacteria) and not algae but I still think it isnt killing your shrimp. If you are concerned that it is then why not feed them with pellet or something.
3. As you know ammonia and nitrite kill shrimps but im dismissing that idea due to your skill in fishkeeping. High temps too can kill.

Interesting, will try some antibiotics see if that works.

will see if they are hungry with an algae wafer, if they are could just be dieing from lack of food, doh!

Cheers Mate :) but will test all the same just to make sure ;)

I seem to have the opposite problem. I bought two from MA a few months ago. I've now got three!

www.snailshop.co.uk seem to have good prices for shrimp (£20 for 20 amanos), but have no experience of the shop.

Are you sure one of them hasn't malted

Ones the snailshop selling are not Amano shrimps. They are a mixture of Neocaridina species (cherry shrimps and relatives). They are very small compared to ones you get from LFS.

Just found a thread on that shop

Seems to be good by all accounts, and postage is less than 4 quid, have to check if they have a 'dead on arrival' policy but at £1.20 a shrimp you can go wrong!

Sam

EDIT - oh right, well the red and other colour ones are even more expensive and guess if they dont do in will big fish the size doesnt matter to much, although guess mortality might be an issue.

It does say live arrival guarantee on their front page. Beware of the Christmas post though. My package got stuck in the post for 2 days even though it was sent out by Royal Mail's Special Delivery- Next day before 1pm.

Edit - They breed their shrimps so I guess there's better chance of them surviving since they are not imported and transported several times before they get to your tank.

Yeh just read that guarantee myself. And yes will wait til after xmas!

I had the same problem with mine in my nano. I put it down to having poor water out of the tap. Doing water changes every other day with poo water wouldnt of helped.
I tested for copper and not even a reading. But think about all the floride's and pesticides in your tap water, that could have a bearing on the shrimp. Thats what im putting my problems down to. So until I go with RO water I am going to give the shrimp a wide birth.
Its a possiblity :dunno:

Graeme.

Guess its possible, trouble is shrimp are so darn handy for algae control! You can win in this hobby!

No, there's three in the tank. I thought that maybe one had malted when I saw the body, but I have one which is about 2" long and two others (that seem to work together), which are both under 1".

Quite odd really!
