I seem to have a never ending list of Tropical Tank Trouble. Just when everything seems all fine something else pops up. I have just finished the course of WS3 whitespot treatment and my neon tetra with the pop eye problem has died. Now I have noticed that all my corys (2 bronze, 3 pandas) have shredded looking fins. Its the fin that is the large one on the back. One bronze cory and 2 pandas are the ones I have had for at least 3-4 months and even though I transfered them to the 65litre tank about 3 weeks ago they seemed ok. They have the same ornaments in this tank that were in their previous tank and the only things that are new are a large cave and a 1Serpia Tetra(Rosy Tetra) that I bought two days ago. I checked the cave for sharp edges inside and out before I bought it. As for the rosy tetra I asked if it was compatible with my other fish and good for a community tank and the assistant said they were perfectly fine. I noticed the shredded fins yesterday. The fins look like something nipped the ends off but one panda looks like his fin have been slit. None of the corys look distressed. They are eating and swimming ok. I have taken everything out of the tank for a couple of hours so I could watch all the fish to see if there was any fin nipping going on and they were all ok. I don't know what else could be the cause.

Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
How many fish and which type.
Seen any fin nipping.
The fins any red streak running through them.
Do the fins look transparent and cloudy.
Any white eding or red edging to the fins.
Do the fins look like there falling apart.

Thanks for the reply Wilder. I know I could rely on you , you have helped me with so many sick fish. I could never thank you enough.
Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 4, dont know ph.
I have 2 bronze corys, 3 panda corys, 3 habrosus corys, 4 neon tetras, 1 rumynose, 2 white cloud minnows, 1 gold mountain minnow and 1 serpia tetra.
There are no red streak or white edging or red edging and the fins dont look transparent or cloudy.
Tha fins do look like they are falling apart, they look frayed but only on the tips. One panda has the worst fin, his fin is frayed but 3/4 way down. When he swims I can see his fin move in about 4 different sections where its been split.

Serpae Tetra i find are notorious for fin nipping, especially if they are lone or in groups lower than five.
i inherited one of these little buggers and it shredded fins on most of my fish. he is now in my turtle tank where he cant do much harm.

i think that will be your problem fish.

I agree...... Sepaes are notorious for this, especially when kept alone.

Sorry it was getting late and had to go to bed.
Its fin nipping or bacterial finrot.
Have you seen any fish nipping the corys fins.
If the fins are falling apart I would issolate and use a bacterial med.

Hi Spishkey, SharonCC and Wilder.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to reply also but couldn't log in and then the site wouldn't load. I didn't know these rosy tetras could be so vicious. I haven't seen him fin nip the corys but I have seen him chase and nip the neons and minnows. I have such a wonderful community tank. The neon tetras, rummynose and minnows shoal together peacefully. They look so cute and if any of them get seperated, the rummynose searches the tank and herds them all back together. I think the rummynose has a crush on the gold cloud minnow because he circles her alot. All my corys huddle up together and sleep. The bronze corys eat together but the pandas and habrosus go mad in the tank together. Things turned nasty after introducing the rosy tetra. The lfs assistant said that he was 100% sure that the rosy tetra was compatible with my fish.He said he had some at home in a community tank.
Yesterday I had to remove a dead neon from the tank and today I had to take out a minnow. Im going to take the evil little fish back to the lfs.
I would like some advice on what to treat all the fish with. Most of them have been fin nipped. I have some melafix, Pimafix and Anti Internal Bacteria treatments. I have also removed the rosy tetra and put him in the 27litre tank so that my beautiful little fish can have their peaceful enviroment back. The problem with the 27 litre tank is that it hasn't cycled, but I'll be taking him back tommorrow anyway. I hope he survives the uncycled tank for the night.

I forgot to ask last night if its possible that the rosy tetra killed the neon and rummynose. They were perfectly fine before I put the rosy tetra in. No sign of disease or stress. When I put the rosy tetra in all the little guys starting hiding and when they did come out the rosy tetra would chase them. The only one that chased him back was the rummynose.
I checked all the fish again for any signs of fungus and fin/tail rot but theres nothing. The smaller fish have been nipped but not as bad as the corys. My bronze corys are still hiding yet before they were always at the front of the tank . The pandas behaviour is back to normal. Should I treat the tank with the meds I mentioned in my last post or do lots of water changes?
I have learnt one thing from this and that is be careful what fish you put in your tank. I am going to stick with the type of fish I already have. I would rather have a few species of peaceful fish than lots of fancy aggressive ones. It was aweful watching my playful little friendly fish hide in fear. They always shoal at the front of the tank and get tossed around in the bubbles especially the minnows.
My concern now is to get the corys better. There has been no change in their behaviour that shows they are sick or hurt but i want to make sure they don't get infected in their fins later.

it may not have actually nibbled them to death but its possible it chased them to death

the best best BEST thing you can do for your cories to help healing is keep the water pristine clean. there are some medicines on the market that can help with healing torn fins but im not sure which ones are sold in the uk.
one of my cories was ravaged by a crayfish and things looked pretty grim, it took just over two months but all her fins have grown back and she is fine again.
im sure yours will be too

good luck and all the best

its not just what you put into a tank its the number of species you get, i.e. shoaling fish need to be in shoals (6+), livebearers need to be in trios or quads (1M/2-3F), etc, etc.

as said keep the water as clean as possble and add some melafix,

I didn't realise fish could be chased to death but now that you mentioned it Spishkey those two fish were the ones that were chased the most. What a terrible way to die.
My priority is helping the corys heal now. I siphon the tank every day and do a water change once a week but if doing more water changes will help them then I don't mind doing a few more a week. I have started the Melafix treatment like you said Davo86. My fish shoals are still small but I am adding a few fish a week. I bought the larger tank so my fish could have proper shoals. I put in two more minnows today that I got in exchange for the little monster I took back. I have 4 tetras(had 5) 4 minnows and 1 rummynose. I have been going back to the LFS for 2 weeks now so I could get a few more rummynose but they never seem to get any in. My shoals of fish are gradually getting bigger and I have to admit they play alot more and don't hide anymore.
I am also having trouble buying a water testing kit. I have been to 4 different pet shops and none of them have liquid water testing kits. Most of the members here have recommended I get a water testing kit but not the strips because they're not accurate.

It the stress aswell as it weaken there immune system.
Melafix is only good once fins are healing and thats it.
Good luck.

Wilder are you sugessting that melafix isn't the right treatment to use. Is there another med I should use first to begin the healing process?

Melafix is only good once fins are healing.
You can use melafix if fins have been nipped to stop infection.
If finrot is bacterial you need to use a bacterial med first.

I know its a betta site this link but think it explains finrot so well.
