My betta Nemo has always seemed to have trouble with his funs splitting. Recently, I was treating him for a split fin with melafix. I just looked at him and it looks like someone took a comb and shredded his fin!!! What is happening?? Is it the melafix???

Splits fins on fish can mend on there own, but if the fins are stredding he has bacterial finrot you will needs some strong meds like tetracycline, or maracyn one and two, is he in his own bowl, as if you do have tetracycline it will wipe the bacteria colony out in the filter.

He had fin rot before and I treated with tetracycline. I keep his water really clean and change it once a week. He has a filter which I change regularly.

Why does this fin rot come back?? He is alone in a 5 gallon tank. He seemed to be getting much better with the melafix. But this is shocking.

I have soem tetracycline here at home and will start meds right away.

Problem with finrot it can come back, how long did you treat, as sometimes it best to do two courses to make sure the bacteria infection has gone completely.

I would read that link it's one of the best finrot advice i have found on the net.

I think I did a week of meds. I will dose longer this time. Gee, I was just feeling like I finally had this fish care thing down. We hadn't had any problems in a while. Thanks for the advice.

Once treatment is over i would see if two water changes a week makes any difference, long finned fish are very prone to finrot, that why they need excellent water conditions.
I would try two weeks of treatment this time, good luck.
