Shovelnoses

If you mean the fish I think you do, then hell no. Those are fish that need 300+ gallon tanks to themselves and would eat the fish.

Depending on the size of your tank a lima shovelnose - Sorubim lima Might be ok..but I really wouldnt advise keeping them with discus.

More info on them Here

I agree with Teelie, unless you have a huge tank (10ft x 5ft x 5ft for example) and don't mind having your Discus being eaten as a delicacy!! :S

Just a little info you could have found yourself if you had cared to use the SEARCH option....

And if you yourself researched rather than being so righteous you could contribute better :p :

Shovelnose Catfish

If you go for Limas (obviously Tiger Shovles are really suited to ponds and public aquaria) then you should be ok with a 6x2x2 tank. Apparantly they do better in groups, though they are out and out predators (RVM had one around 10" that took to snacking on 7" bala sharks)

Adult discus should be ok but watch the size of the fish you keep with them.

If you were thinking of Zebra Shovelnose (Merodontotus tigrinus) then you should make sure they are around 8" when you get them (as they can be very tender when younger) and they will need a wider tank as they can hit 20 - 24" incaptivity.

Righteous?? Not been called that before. I quite like it!! .

The point being made was that this forum has a great search facility and if crackmonkey had taken the time to do a little searching he would have found his anwer without having to pose the question.

If you have a quick look at the first page in the trop chit chat section you will see that he asked asked a number of questions, all of which he could have done a quick search for to find the answer.

No offence to you crackmonkey, you or anyone else, but is that not in part what the search function is intended for??

The last three responses to his question, your own, mine and DevilsAdvocate's all in fact provided links because we had searched :p .

The other problem is he said simply "shovelnose" which means anything from a 3 foot monster to a more practical 12" fish. Being as specific as possible helps. ;)

if its a shovelnose catfish or a tiger shovel nose, no i have a few and when we move i will be building a tropical pond for thses fish as there are large fish but you might mean something differnt then i dont know

I wouldnt advise keeping any large active long whiskered catfish with discus as it will frighten them to death, the only catfish suitable for discus tanks are Corydoras and plecos really
