Hi everyone,

I was hoping to pick your brains to make the best decision for my 12 gallon tank. I currently have 3 neon tetras and 2 black tetras.

I realize I don't have a lot of room to play around with, and I don't have my heart set on anything in particular, so I'm very open to suggestions. Would like a nice algae eater though to help with the tank....

Is it healthy to vary the species or would a good size school of tetras be just as happy?

Should I stick with the neon and black tetras, or can I vary up the tetra types?

Okay, that's all the questions for now. I'd love your opinions!! Thanks!

Yes an algae eater is good my be two as tetra's don't do much bottom feeding, I would build your shoals up on the black neons and the neon tetra.

Hi kimichan :)

What are the dimensions of your 12 gallon....hex, orb or rectangle?

for algae eating duties you could try a few otos. To keep them, however, your tank will be have to be mature and kept very well maintained. They are delicate little things and any problems with water parameters etc could end up with them dying.

To be honest you don't have a lot of options with only 12 gallons to play with.

Perhaps an apple snail would be a better choice than the otos.

I understand they deal with algae rather well and if you do go the snail route you could probably then also get a few cories at the bottom to deal with the general food clean up duties.

After this though your tank would be fully stocked IMHO.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies! :D

I'm thinking a snail would be fun and then get a couple cories. Sounds like a good idea!

So, with that in mind do you think I could have 10 tetras? 5 neons and 5 black tetras?

BTW, it's a rectangular shape measuring 21"L x 11"W x 18"H. And yes, 12 US gallons. Thanks!

Thanks Steve, and everyone for your advice. I just needed a push in the right direction! :)

These are my first fish, and I want them healthy and happy!
