Following a previous post my leather is not looking great and has started to get worse, so need to take further action, but im unsure weather to cut out the dead bit or cut frags off of it or both, the main stalk of the leather seems to be slightly effected which is why i think i should frag it to try and save it as if i cut part of the stalk im worried it will not recover.

any advice?

His pics are in this thread.

I think you should frag it as long as you know what you're doing. Otherwise you may wait until the conditions worsen and you're sure it would die anyways...that what a little experimentation wont hurt. Fragging leather isnt very hard or complicated though.

the pics in that thread don't seem to indicate any healthy tissue that's worth fraggin. In fact, that looks more like a leather preparing to shedd than anything.

Although fragging a leather maybe easy...it is not 'simple' per se. Some softies release toxins (terpenoids) when fragged and they should be removed from the tank during the frag process. Fragging is for reducing the size of the frag, trading, increasing colonies, etc...doing it while a coral is 'sick', well, I'd avoid it. See Ski's post. SH

Ok an update for you

Day after posting things got worse with the leather as part of it was starting to die and crumble away so took the decision to cut away the dead unhealthy bit, unfortunately it was affecting the stalk to so part of that had to go, my course of action was to remove some tank water to a clean seperate container then place the coral and several small bits of live rock and place them into the same container, once in there moved it all to a better working area and started by making sure I had a clean sharp blade (man are these things difficult to cut!) and cut a kind of pie shape out of the top larger than the unhealthy area, once that was done i cut the bit i removed so that i was left with 3 reasonable sized frags with only healthy flesh (not sure flesh is the right word) and used cynoacrylyte to stick them to several bits of rock, unfortunately the leather really was in a bad state and im having to monitor it very closely as a result as the stalk part really isnt looking great, 2 of the frags look like they may take one im not so sure about so will give it a chance before handling it agian.

The main leather thats left has continued to act as it did before opening slightly but periodically im moving one powerhead to blow away the dead tissue which is concerning me as i'm now not sure how well it will survive, I am currently considering removing the rest of the top as this seems fairly healthy and making a lrger frag from it in the hope it will survive and flourish.

Your comments on the best way forward would be greatly appreciated, as I would dearly love to save atleast one frag and hopefully more.

I have continued to monitor my water more often just to check there is no knock on effects with that and all seems fine.

be sure to run some fresh carbon through all of this to absorb any toxins that are released into the water by the leathers.

cheers guys will keep you posted, ansd thanks for reminding me about the carbon as i must change it this weekend!
