one of my top dog fish has within the last day become withdrawn and hovers around the back of the tank in the corner. It's not eating and its neck area is puffed out below its mouth. what should I do????? is it holding???
please help  (sorry for asking but never had a holding fish before)

Can you post a pic? It sounds like holding but if not it could be an illness so it would be nice to be sure. :good:

Definatly sounds like its holding. My zebra is hold currently. She hangs out around the heater all day and has just had maybe a bite to eat in a few weeks. The babies are about to hatch, I havent decided on whether im gonna give them a shot at life or not. I think a friend of mine may take them. She sounds like she is holding. Look to see if she appears to be shuffling her mouth as they shuffle the eggs around to keep them oxygenated.

can't do a pic  . I have looked at images on google and seen holding fish and it looks similar. on closer inspection I swaer I can see little yellow balls in her mouth. She is a saulosi and must have bred with the electric blue (might be another saulosi). do the young have any chance if I keep her in the tank or will they be devoured? I'm worried about transfering her incase I do her damage or stress her out too much but I'd like to try and keep the young. Any Ideas? I'm very new to this scenario.

I would say it is holding, if I ever let my females stay in the main tank while holding they always hide away and just hang about.

want to keep the young, what is the most effective way of doing this? I have a small hospital tank, should I use this? + what is the least stressful way of capturing the female? Cheers for replies so far! :good:
