In my tank when opening the lid, i noticed these fly like things, what could they be, they are like i light lime green colour and also thre is loads of little things crawling on my floating plants that seem to jump like a flee.

Should i be concerned about the flies (could it be mosquitos) also what about the jumping things..

I just want to make sure there is no danger to not just my fish but myself and others in the house.

Sorry if this seems silly but its really bothering me.

you might want to google it. it may be some form of water flea or some kind of daphnia but dont hold me to that. hope that helps.

Thanks :)

anyone else got any opinoins or can answer my 2 questions?

Its unlikely to be Daphnia as far as I know they can't jump. As you are in the UK they are possibly some kind of aphid, bit early in the year for them unless you have a conservatory or greenhouse connected to your house. Did you recently buy your floating plants? if so where from because like me you might have picked up something from Asia - in my case it was Dragonfly larvae which ate all my fry from the tank I added the plants to and then turned into the flying version that surprised me when I opened the lid.

If they are mosquitoes they are unlikely to be the kind that carry malaria so I wouldn't worry ... unless you got the plants from Asia, though your fish should have eaten them.

What about a picture?

I get a fly on some of my tanks no idea why or what they are though soz.

Be totaly imposible to picture them, they are way to tiny...

the small things on the plants are either aphids or mites and are harmless ot the fish. In fact the fish usually eat them if they land on the water. Flies are harmless as well. These insects are usually an indication there is some rotting food around the top of the tank under the coverglass. Perhaps remove the coverglass and give it a clean and check for rotting food.
The aphids/mites can be removed by wiping them off the plants with a damp sponge or your fingers.

Mozzies are black and don't like moving water. If you have lots of surface turbulence they won't be mozzies. If you do have mozzies in the tank they will come out at night and bite heck out of everyone in the room.

Daphnia live in water and dry out quickly if removed from it.

Ok so here is whqat i deicded to do, i boiled thier asses.. with all in that tank been bottom dwellers, i decided to poor boiling water on to the floating plants but no loads, just enough to aggitate the surface, i kept an eye on the temp while doing it and it did not change much, had another look later and cant seem to see none of the mite things.

I just hope they are dead and gone now i hate the bloody things.
