What other stuff will i need to convert my 10g to planted tank? Any fertilizers/ supplements that are recommend for when the plant growth slows down after the first 3 months?

Also should I get the coralife fluorescent life or can I just stay with power compact fluorescent in my incandescent sockets?

:sly: :)

You don't need the CO2 stuff and the flourish excel - both provide co2.
I'd get the excel & set up DIY CO2 later.
Laterite is good.
If you get the right power compacts you'll have ok lighting.
Test kit -of course.
Why blackwater? -it will actually slow down plant growth.

How planted are you planning?

some anubias, some fast stuff like vallisneria, some others. A good balance between fast and slow, but not as densely as some others on the forum. So you say flourish excel, why? because my tank is so small? also it will be tetra cory tank. possibly honey gourami if i get good enough
- i can either keep my tank now and use power compact or buy the 30 dollar lighting and get maybe another 10- possibly 20 or 30

- will blackwater really slow the plant growth? never knew
- what about other plant supplements, any others recommended for when they hit the growing slump?

thanks for the reply diademhill

anyone? the deadline to get the free shipping for $50 is tomorrow at noon so I'd like to buy before then.

24'' ligth for a 10 gallon?

most are 15''

24'' ligth for a 10 gallon?

most are 15''

And the 15" creates spots in the tank that aren't covered or don't receive as much light. The 24" only juts out about an inch on either side and the whole tank is lit.

I have tried power compacts on a 10g, and the lighting was not well destributed.

Excel doesn't not provide as much CO2 as the nutrafin unit and it is more expensive in the long run. Smaller systems can get away with it, especially if they are low-tech, but if your lighting passes the 2WPG mark, I would just invest in the Nutrafin unit. Much easier to maintain, IMO, and you'll have much less algae. For the $21.99 and a jar of yeast and a 10 lb bag of sugar, which is about $35 total, you'll have CO2 much cheaper than if you invested in $8 bottles of Excel every month. In 4 months, you'll make up the initial cost and you'll have over a year's supply of CO2, and better yeast.

I would remove the Black water extra since you plan on having Valisneria (sp) anyway, which is a plant that actually does well in harder water.

I agree with what has been said. If you're getting a custom hood with the T-5 lighting then you're being wise by investing in what you are, but take off the excel and the blackwater extract. I've also heard the excel just puts extra in the water for algae to grow on, and I'd only have that black water extract in a low light environment as that's what it promotes to start with.

Happy setting up. :D

thanks for all the help guys. so nutrafin and other stuff besides blackwater. will get the hood when I get another tank.
