Shipping A Short Distance

I'm planning on taking some fish from my aquarium to my parent's about 3 hours away. Is it possible since it is a short distance to just fill an ice chest about half full and put the fish in?

Sure, just make sure it has a top to keep the water a reasonable temperature. Many larger fish sold at auctions are transported this way, they stay in the coolers for 12+ hours at times.
