Hey all,
Have been really happy attempting to breed platys and waiting for the babys, when i looked into my 10 gal that has one very fat female and i noticed a little fry :hyper: She is giving birth and I am so excited but in my excitment I have completely gotten when to feed them, Will they feed immediatley or after 12 hours or what? Sorry for the dumb question I am just extremely exited right now as I have put a lot of effort into this and it is paying off  I am a daddy

Drew

You can feed them immediatly, as they are livebearers and are ready for food right away.

Sorry for another post, but I was wondering how long the birthing process actually takes? I want to move her back into the platy tank as sson as she is done to minimize loss of fry...Please respond if you can help...thanks so much.

Drew

Congrats on the babies coming through!!! :yahoo: :kana: :yahoo: :fish:

What type of platies are you breeding??

Usually it takes about a day to complete, you have to just watch her. She will get skinnier, as this means she has let all her babies out and you will want to try and look to see if she has any babies left in her, as this will also tell you if she still has more to go. But I would say a good 12 hours would be a good time, as that's how long it took my swordtail to give birth. It was an all day event.

Fishkies,
Thanks you so much, I know I must sound 12 years old but this is so exciting! So it is about 10:00 pm here, you think they will be ok overnight to let her give birth and then wake up around 10 am to take her out and feed the fry? Once again, thank you so much for helping me right now!! :D

Drew

oh sorry and to answer your question I think they are sunset platys, I am not particulary concerned about coloration and what not

Nah, not at all, I know how you feel, I myself just had Baby swordtails this past sunday.

Okay I would leave her in overnight, let her try to drop the rest of the fry, then check on her in the morning and try to see how many fry she may have had. You will definatly see a difference in the size of her once she has stopped dropping fry.

Can you see the eyes of the babies in her belly?? This would also tell you when she has let most of them out.

It is good to try and feed the fry at least 4 times a day, however 5 to 6 times a day would be ideal.

Ok here goes...
Yup, can still see the gravid spot or the babys eyes on her.
She has only had two so far...
And I know this is a redundant question but will the fry be ok without food until tommorrow morning?

Fishkies you are great :good:

Drew

Just rembered there is some kinda hormone within the female to prevent her from beig hungry....I guess you could scratch the question about her eating the fry... lol

If you need food for the babies quick...all you need to do is crush up the tropical flakes you feed to your platies now. Make it into a powder like substance and this will work fine. She may take a bit longer then to let all her babies out then, especially if she just started.

Yeah as long as your platies are well fed, you will hardley have any problems with them ever eating their own fry.

Great I will def do that....Ok fishkies I promise last question! Should I drop some food in tonight or just wait until she is done birthing? Thanks you so much for your kindness and help! Need any platies

Drew

You can put some food in now as the babies will then have some food for the night, however as you already know the mom will probably not eat because of her hormones.

Sorry don't need any platies....my boyfriend just had some fry of his own that I picked out to take already... LOL

Congrats on the fry and have fun! Their a joy to watch grow!

ROFL...................... Congrats on the platies poopsy. AHAHA.. love saying that name.. LOL
