Yay! Congrats Naomi, I knew it couldn't be long. Do get us some pics...

hi all
:-( :-( :-( :-(

i got home last night to look at my fry i was so excited, but i wasnt prepared to find 6 dead and 1 alive. it looked like she had a couple of miscarriages,a few which were deformed and the only one which was alive has disappeared so taking that one is dead. cant believe it these were my first. the mummy is fine though swimming about happy enough eating well.

what could have caused such a bad birth?? i have done a part water change today and added some methelyne blue just incase she had caught something bacterial before her birth as i did by some new fish which could have brought something.

should i be prepared for her to drop again?? someone has put on the forum that they will give birth roughly every four weeks now, males have already showed her alot of attention wink wink nudge nudge ;)

thanks for all your congratulations though

when she has abig belly andit gets a bit bigger in a day then she is going to give birth put her in a breeder net

what could have caused such a bad birth??
most guppies have been intensly farmed, some guppies have been crossed along the line and have been breed, this is were the genes get weak. when the inbreed fish breed with each other, there are for cromosones which control growth. seeing as 23 chromosomes are in sperm and 23 chromosome in the egg cell when the 2 develop into fry there are 46 per cell.

so the possible out come for growth is
GG Gg gG gg
big G being the stronger genes and the little g being the weak gene.

so 25% of the brood are likely to be deformed
50% are going to be weak/average
and 25%will be strong.

obviously this will not be apparent on every batch its generally on average of all her births combined.

or another possibilty is she is a young female that hasnt got a fully developed womb so they dont make excellent mothers at this stage. as they get older they have bigger broods and a higher sucess rate

well a healthy fish will have fry every month or se and if there is no male present she could still make her self preggers for about 6 months

so this is the same for all livebearers then? i would say she is about the average size of a full grown female.

so this is the same for all livebearers then?

well mainly guppies as they are crossed with endlers.

but not as common for platys to be hybridized with swordtails. but guppys are highly and intensly farmed

thats what my fish is a platy, should she have had a better birth process then??? picture at top of topic

she could have come from a poor brood herself or she could have been stressed whilst giving birth. also water quality can cause this, but generally its down to geneticcs

i just hope her next fry are ok but if she is due again in about 4weeks it will be the same time as my guppies (have a look on my other topic)
