When I switched around my tank a few weeks ago, I noticed I had a female m.callainos holding. Well this evening I thought I'd try and take a few pics and just as I was finishing up I noticed something in a crevice on the far right hand side of the tank. And it was a fry!!! The egg sack is completely gone and he's been darting out to snatch little tidbits, so he's probably close to a week old. The female is still holding on to a few of them, cause her chin is still bulging and she isn't eating yet. I'm so excited. I tried to get some pics, but they were all very blurry.

Here's the fry pic, it's really blurry, but it was the best my little crappy camera could do, and he's so tiny.

To give you an idea of how small he is, here's a pic of the rocks he's hiding in, the crevice that's circled is his.

Here's a pic taken about 3 weeks ago of his mama.

Here's the proud papa, he rarely comes out of his cave unless it's to eat or entice another female in. :hey:

Here's another male m.callainos, I managed to get a good close pic of his teeth.

And here's my alpha male p.acei, he has been trying like crazy to breed with one of his girls, but no luck so far. :sly:

I'm also pretty sure one of the labs are holding, I won't know for another week or two, IME labs are hard to tell for the first week or so, and they rarely hold until term.

Hope you all enjoy, I'll keep trying to get a clear pic of the little fry, fingers crossed he makes it.

Hey, congratulations!! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: Your fish look lovely, I have no experience with cichlids, but they look really nice. Keep us posted on the little one's progress (more pics!) and any new babies you end up with.

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you think of any easy to breed peacful mouthbrooders? I want to add some to my 20g flat hexagon tank.

Thats awesome! :hyper:

This her first batch?

How many are you expecting from her?

Again, congrats dude 8)

The only african cichlids you could keep in a 20gal are shelldwellers. They aren't mouth brooders, but the females lay their eggs and raise their fry in large snail shells.

Yes it's her first batch. IME they usually hold around 20fry in their first brood, but it can vary around 10 fry either way.
And I'm a dudette, but thanks. ;)

Just hope it doesnt get munched

I know, I'm hoping it makes it, but if not it's really no big deal, if he survives it was meant to be. I have to admit I'm rooting for him though.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

thats a good shot of the callainos with the teeth, i think it should be entered in next months cichlid forum photo contest :good:, and i hope it all works out for the little one :good: and beautiful acei

Thanks very much, I took your advice and entered the m.callainos to the contest on cichlid forum, and to ratemyfishtank.com.

Great photos and beautiful fish!
Congratulations and I hope the little 'un makes it. ;)

Just thought I'd drag this from the depths and give you guys an update.

The babies all got munched  . Or they found a really good hiding place and never come out, which isn't unheard of, but I doubt it. Oh well. As I speak the alpha male is trying really hard to breed again, so we'll see what happens.

Oh, and caboose, I didn't get picked for the contest. Hopefully I'll get a better camera pretty soon and I can try again.

thats to bad to hear  better luck next time eh :good: and that male callainos is a frisky bugger aint he :fun:

Yeah, he's so frisky he won't let the acei or labs breed, it's a good thing I'm not too interested in fry.
