Hi Guys, I was wondering if sharp sand from B&Q was OK to use as substrate? I bought a bag for £4.99 and am wondering if I could use it as substrate?

to be honest, sharp sand is a mixture of igneous and metamorphic rock that has been shattered apart i believe. Do 2 tests on it... First pour some vinegar over a test amount of it and watch for fizzing. If there is none then thats good. Secondly, test for salt. Easiest and fastest way to do it is to put some in your mouth and lick it. If you can taste salt then dont use it. You could boil it endlessly, but it would cost you another £10 in electricity so it is not worth it.

I'm not a pro on this, but i believe this is the simplist way of testing it.
