Do severums have the common sex determinator of longer fins for the males? I have been considering trying to breed these wonderful little guys but can't figure out which are males and which are females. I am going to get a group of six and see if they pair off but I would like to know the differences.

well as far as i no, the males have longer fins, and pointed dorsal and anal fins.... good luck trying to find a pair

There isnt any way of telling the sex of sevs, some people say the males have more red in the face but i proved that wrong with my female have alot of red on her face. The best way to breed them is get 6 and they will form 1 pair, then take the rest back.

it is basicaly impossible to sex severums when theyre not breeding. so as yopu said, get a large tank and a school and let them pair off

Not to flame, but I'll respectfully disagree with the "impossible to determine the sex of severums" idea. Look at the faces. If you have the common appendiculatus, the males will have "wormy" markings, females don't (or very few). I've bred and raised a lot of severums and this method works about 90% of the time. The fin length is not a good indicator, as a rule, until the fish are quite large. Even then it can be misleading.
