Hi all i'm new to this breeding but have been using the info on this site for a while i have a seperate tank with my sailfin molly fry in (about 20) they're just 3 weeks old and are already 1/2 an inch long just wondered whe and i go about sexing them i know i have to look for the anal fin being a fan shape or a Gonadopodum but when should i start. Can you seperate them into all males and all females before they start mating? please any advise would be greatfully recieved :good:

When sexing fry, look for a gravid spot. Gonopodiums don't develop for a while and are so tiny, it's hard to see them. Gravid spots are much easier to see. As soon as you see one with a spot, seperate it. The spot means the fish is sexually mature.

Hi thanks for that what should i be looking for dark black spots around the anafin how do i tell on te black fish? im not sure what to look for ne pix or descriptions pls

Sailfin Mollies (Poecilia latipinna) dont rearly dispaly gravid stop's, this is more a guppy and Gambusia traite.

With mollies any males will hold back the devlopment of the young males, as they will need to be as large as the alpha male to compete.

I keep the fry seperate and when a male sexes out I leave it in untill the other fry get to a good adualt size.
I then remove him and the next alpha males will sex out very quickly.

This will happen over 6 months but I've seen fry get to 10 months befor sexing out to males, it's all about compeating with other fish.

Helter

How can i then ensure that i dont get all males in one tank i oly have one fry tank can i add younger fry in later or will the older fry eat them?

their leave the young fry alond untill the get to about 2-3 inch
