I was just wondering how to tell the difference between male and female platies, I have 2 sunburst and 2 red platies, I have no idea whats what, I would like to breed them sometime so if someone could help me that would be great. (there's a pic of them in my sig)

Bit hard to see in that photo, but they all look male to me apart from possibly the one at the back of the photo facing away from the camera. Which is strange, because the body of the 2 dark red platys look decidedly female.

Look at the anal fin (between the tail/caudal fin and the "stomach"). If it's a proper fin that can extend fully, then it's female. If it's a tube that moves around between 2 small fins, it's male. Males are also noticeably smaller than mature females, and have less rounded stomachs.

thnx...i'll see if i can get a better look... nice sig by the way

I agree. Looks like 3 males, 1 female. You'd have better luck with breeding if it was the opposite: 3 females and 1 male. Your one female might get harassed by all the males, but I suppose it all depends on the temperment of your platies. Good luck if you try to breed.

i looked at them more closely...i'm pretty sure the two orange ones are female (their back fins can fully extend) and the red ones are both males (tube like fins on the back)

I couldn't tell on one ... but for sure one of the reds in a male ... and I think one of the oranges .... males have a "rod" and females have a connected fin when mature

Looks to me by the pic that the two reds are both male and the sunbursts are female. JMO.
