Hey Everyone,

I am thinking about getting my German Blue Rams this Friday and I was wondering what the best method is to sex juveniles? I was guessing that looking at the anal fin would be my best bet? I figured that the pink belly wouldn't show up until they were a little more mature...and I know that the idea of blue specales in the black spot isn't always reliable. Please let me know what you guys think? Thanks in advance!

Sometimes the pink bellies do show up at early ages so look for that. they can be mature at 6-7 weeks. Yeah the black dot is not reliable but it can be helpful sometimes. I notice that the dot can change if the fish is being stressed or being dominate. My dominate male would have a black spot where my less dominate one had no spot. Males normale will have the blue in the dot or might even lack the dot all together. Females most of the time have a solid black dot. The big give away can be the 3 first spicks on the dorsal fin. The males have much longs front spikes.

I would look for pink bellies with black solid spots for a female. Male look for a longer first 2 or 3 spikes on the head and yes longer all around fins. ALSO males tend to be larger also with extended pelvic fins.

Good luck hope you find a pair. When I first started looking for rams I was not so sure how to sex them I thought I got a pair but it turned out to be 2 males. Now I know what to look for. Go with your gut. The other day I was looking at some rams and I can now easily tell the sexes apart. Grrr you live you learn.

I have 3 and I'm unsure of the sexes  Your advice will help me a lot :)

Your welcome guys. I did lots of research on these guys to figure out how to sex them. By the time I could tell them apart I already had bought my 2 males. I am ready next time.
