I have a varitey of ages of fry, the oldest being about 3 months. One of them (I think he's a guppy, still hard to tell) is very obviously male, the rest appear to be female. Waht age do they become sexually active? When should I separate him? The only think I could do is put him back in the main tank but then he might start to try and mate with his mother as she's the only guppy I have!

hi scooterchick

i think as soon as you can tell there male they are sexually active
id seperate him straigt away
might be best to get a few more males to add a new blood line in as not to inbreed to much :good:

Thanks for the reply! Ok dilemma time. I have 9 fry, 2 guppies and 7 mollies in one tank, and in the mai tank are 5 mollies and 1 female guppy (his mother). Think I'd be better moving the female guppy baby into the main tank and leaving the male with the mollies? He won't be able to do any damage that way you think? The temps of the 2 tanks are different so I'll need to lower the fry tank and raise the main tank slightly so I can cross tanks without shocking the fish.

Right think I've answered my own question. Oh except think moving the lone female fry into the tank will be ok? She's approx half an inch long and the biggest fish in the main tank are mollies, she's not liable to get bullied is she?

Just seen the male guppy trying to get it on with the molly fry!

He and she still look identical except for their nether regions, when will he start to develop his fancy colours? They've got beige bodies, big black eyes and black tails (so far).

they start to coulor anywere from about 2 months to 5 months depending on the fish

I have hints of colour in my 1 week old fry only 1 or two of them but there is definately patterns and colours coming through
