I am so confused

I am having a hard time being sure what is M and F.

Other than the long fins, how can you tell ? I have seen body shape mentioned. What is the difference in shape ?

Also, when buying in the LFS. Who is it that puts them into the cups labeled male or female ? Do the employees do it or the breeder ?

what do you think of these 2 ?

Females are usually fatter around the belly region if well looked after. This is due to eggs.
Females have a white ovipositor (egg laying tube) adult males are dark.
Young males also have a white ovipositor.
Males will flare their fins and open their gills to threaten each other, females don't. Males will sometimes flare at females to drive them out of their territory or when displaying to them. Females won't flare back.
Females quite often have brown stripes running along the body whereas males are usually one colour.

top pic looks female, bottom pic is male

female bettas WILL flare their fins and gills at each other, but when doing so, the beard (inside of the gill flaps) is smaller, and are generally only at the side, whereas males beards are bigger and extends under the chin as well as down the sides.

brown stripes running down the body are not a definitive sign of females, they are stress stripes and any dark coloured betta splendens can get them, it is rarer to see them on adult males, but young males quite often show them. it is probably noticed more often on females, as they tend to be sold while quite young, whereas males are grown on for longer to develop finnage.

Well so far it is the pink one that I had to remove from the tank. I want to re-home it but I can't even tell people what sex it is

It was flaring alot and when it does it has darker flaps that come out. Is there somthing I can do to get it to flare so I can look again ?
