I have two angelfish and one sometimes nips the other and bullies it. Are they likely to be a pair or two males? Hoping to get another two angels so should hae a pair out of four. How do I tell sexes apart?

I have a breeding pair who occasionally have a domestic in the tank..

What sort of bullying is it? As some males do try to dominate, but then again females can be just as bad - with angels it's a case of personality.

I believe the only way to sex them is when they are actually laying & fertilizing the eggs, however my females have always seemed to swell for about a week before laying the eggs.

How large is your tank? They prefer a lot of room when in groups, and a spare tank for the pair & then the fry is also required. Bare in mind that most captive bred angels have unfortunately lost some of the ability to care for the young once hatched.

Regards,

i have a pair that is laying eggs every 2 weeks or so, and they, for months, have been super sweet and nice to each other. even before laying eggs, it was noticeable how they were hanging around together and being nice to one another. it looked like they were dating, certainly no aggression, even now that they're laying eggs like clockwork.
however, I have another female in that tank, and she's always fighting with the mated female...so maybe you have two fish of the same sex? just wait it out, eventually they'll lay eggs if they're opposite sexes...the female will have a larger, wider tube (for laying the eggs), the male will have a smaller, pointed tube (to fertilize the eggs). :good:

A breeder once told me that the males have a slight bump on their head same way as you'd sex a discus. I have no idea how true that is but on my pair one def has a bump and the other doesn't so he could be spot on. some experianced members will be able to give a better answer though
