I spied a beautiful gold and a beautiful red severum in the lfs. They told me they were'nt community fish and would only be okay with other large fish but I've fallen in love with them. I have a large tank (400 litres sorry dont know what that is in gallons about 100 I think) but it has small shoals of various tetras, danios, rasboras and corys as well as larger red rainbows, boesmanii rainbows, bala sharks, angels. Would the Severums kill or eat the tetras etc? If I moved the small tetras would the severums be okay with the larger fish? Also do they eat plants? I wanna make sure they wont kill my other fish before I consider buying them? Thanks

They are a great fish, but they wouldnt go to good in your tank as they would see most of those fish as food.
100g is plenty of room for 2 sevs, maybe even have 1 sev and one oscar and a catfish, but as far as with barbs and such its a no no.

Leep us posted with what you are going to do.

Severums make great cichlids for large fish communities, the balas, rainbows, angels and corys would make great tankmates. The tetras, danio's and rasboras would probably be eaten eventually as severums do get to a good size and as placid as they may be are still cichlids.

From what I've read large tetras like buenos aires or congo tetras should be good target fish. They're fast enough and strong enough to avoid becoming dinner, but anything smaller than that is a no-no. I've got buenos aires in with my baby severum right now. They're about the same size, though.
