Hey all,

Lately i have been reserching on what I could put in a rio 300, it comes to about 79.9(or so) U.S gallons,
I have read that a 55 would be a bare minimum for just 1 adult, now i would like to either go for about 6 juvies or just buy a breeding pair, I would also just leave the fry in the tank with them to raise on there own.
if i do buy juvies it gonna be a long time before they pair of , then i would have to sell the others after i get a pair as overstocking wil become a prob. So thats why i think i should rather get a breeding par , so that i would nt have to go through all the throuble of waiting, then needing to sell the others and so on. But on the other hand i get see the lives of them and see how they pair and interact, and so on.

Would it be possible to raise the fry to a selling size in the tank with the parents ?? , i of course am gonna have external filters rather than the internal juwel one,

you proby think im mad asking if they can live with the parents as they can have to 1000 fry.

and i would of course need to first find if my lfs is willing to take some, (maybe for a small fee, would be nice)

Ok, whats your comments on idea ?

thanks

i think you should get the pair. as for raising the fry its always good to seperate them as they will tend to get eaten. either that be in a spare tank or a tank divider. hope this helps

I have had a breding pair of gold sevs (6-7inches) in a 30gal, only whilst they were getting ready to breed, once the eggs hatched i removed them. you could go with the juvies and sell them once they pair and keep one pair, or try and find a breeding pair that have allready bread, or just get two severums one male one female (large ones) from either 2 separate places or just from a breeder who knows the wont breed.
good luck ;)

I like the idea of a tank divider actually, why would the fry get eaten ?? do you mean by the parents, i thought they cared for them for a couple of weeks ??

Thanks again ,

yeah i mean by the perents. i try to keep flyer cichlids. never had any success YET, need to get the tank divider. when you can see the numbers of fry starting to decrease then remove them.

I have been looking at tank dividers and I most likely would need to make one as the tank size, but I wonder if anyone knows of mesh type sheets that have really small holes in them as i plan to separate fry, and still have water flow,

does anyone have experience of the size of the fry before they start to get eaten, proly not, so it probly best to just find a meshing with the smalllest holes possible,

also does anyone know how i could have a divider that i could easily slide in and out , when the tank is full with water, I also dont want to have to stick anything to the sides of the tank before starting as I want the parents to have more space when there is no fry and so on, also i plan to use the tank for various other fish later on after ive had severums, so i cant have a divider thats "permanant"

I would appreciate any feedback

thanks

at an estimate at about 2mm long after about 2 weeks at the most.
if your making one a good idea would be to get a shhet of plastic and cut large holes in it everywhere like holes 2" squared and staple something like womans tights over them.

do you mean perspex ?, if you do then how would i secure it, i just wondering how the juwel rio tanks are made, cause i dont know if it would be able to just slide in or would have to go in at an angle,
